PMS or PMDD?

Is PMS just part of life?

As it affects an estimated 75% of menstruating women, perhaps we need to know more?

Ever wondered why you get these awful monthly symptoms or how blissful life might be without them?

For some, this ‘time of the month' actually rules their lives. Others are unaware that they might be experiencing PMDD and not PMS.

Despite it's prevalence and the awful symptoms this Syndrome can bring, traditional medicine falls far short from providing successful remedies, says naturopath Narelle Stegehuis, a professional member of POSAA and Thyroid Aust, who is leading the way in the natural treatment of this and other puzzling hormonal conditions.

Is this You?

Do you have distressing emotional and/or physical symptoms before your monthly menstrual periods? Do these symptoms disrupt your life - perhaps your work or your relationships? Do these symptoms go away when your flow begins or shortly thereafter, only to return before your next period?

Some Symptoms to look for

  • Lowly moods or mood shifts
  • Weight gain and fluctuations
  • Anxiety or tension
  • Feeling ‘out of control'
  • Irritability, anger
  • Lowered Libido
  • Concentration difficulties
  • Lethargy, general loss of energy
  • Appetite change, food cravings
  • Sleep problems (too little or too much)
  • Physical symptoms (bloating, breast tenderness, pain)

So are you experiencing PMS or PMDD?

If the above sounds like you, or someone you know, then you might have a condition known as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder or PMDD. To find out more about PMDD or how to get respite from those awful PMS symptoms, please read on...

PMDD is a severe form of PMS, which occurs generally in the second half of the cycle and ends when menstruation begins or shortly thereafter.

Contributing factors to PMS and PMDD are ovarian imbalances such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Fibroids, Cysts, Endometriosis or Oestrogen dominance. And yes such conditions are treatable.

"Whether you have significant PMS or in fact PMDD, life's just too short - this hormonal imbalance needs to be both understood and treated. Sadly, practitioners often prescribe antidepressants or pain reducing drugs, masking the symptoms, instead of addressing the underlying cause of their patient's poor health. Further, these drugs also have side effects which bring their own set of new problems."

Hints and Tips

Dietary changes such as reducing carbohydrates and increasing good fats can greatly improve this Syndrome. Even the reduction of coffee and alcohol can substantially assist with a symptom like anxiety. Why live on antidepressants if they might not be necessary? Targeted nutrients, to substitute or compliment traditional medicine, can do wonders to support dietary changes if required.

Mandy's Story

Mandy, pictured right, had suffered from PMS all her adult life. This coupled with the demands of her work and family of five really made her life at times quite a struggle. After careful analysis of her symptoms, Narelle developed a holistic natural health program that addressed her underlying ovarian disorder, which was at the root of her PMS and weight struggle, seeing her go from a size 24 to 12.

"Fresh energy to keep up with the kids, better sleep and losing weight in places I've never been able to budge. My partner certainly doesn't miss the mood shifts nor do I miss the pain and bloating!" says Mandy
